Are you aware that Field Sobriety Tests are not mandatory? That's right, these tests are voluntary. If you are stopped for a traffic violation and asked to submit to some "tests", politely refuse. If a cop smells alcohol on your breath/person, they are no longer looking for a reason to let you drive away. Cops are counting on you being intimidated and complying with their requests. They may tell you that you have to take the tests, but that is a lie. Attempting to perform the Standardized Field Sobriety Tests will likely lead to your arrest. Cops receive minimal training in administering these tests and most do not following the specific guidelines. This leads to officers seeing "clues" that aren't really present and innocent people are arrested. Know your rights and protect them. Be polite but decline the officer's requests. |
